IRS Seizure of Property
The IRS has the power to seize your wages and assets including finds from your bank accounts, paychecks, stocks, bonds, and even Social Security checks. They may seize your cars, jewelry, retirement funds, insurance policies, and even your home, and sell them at auction.
IRS Wage Levy (Garnishment)
The IRS can demand that your employer send a portion of your wages directly to the IRS until your tax debts are paid. A small amount is allowed to be exempt from collection, but that amount is often too little to meet living expenses.
Wage garnishment is considered a “continuous levy” meaning they can continue to seize a large portion of your wages until your tax debt is paid.
Negotiating a Manageable Solution
The IRS takes this kind of action when they have tried to communicate with you, but feel that their attempts to resolve the outstanding tax liabilities have been ignored. They are required by the U.S. Constitution to provide the taxpayer with a “Notice of Intent to Levy,” informing you of your right to a hearing before the levy is effective.
